A-M

We are always being asked about available books that cover our Tropical plant interests and I have managed to find enough time, on a very wet November weekend, to put together a comprehensive list that has even made my own mouth water! I have read or owned many of these but there are many other exciting books that I will add comments about as they are delivered. I have also included some of the best covers that are currently out of print but you may want to try and find a second hand copy on the web while waiting for a new print run.

Architectural Plants by Christine Shaw

PB Delivery approx 3 days

Architectural plants are plants that make a bold statement in the garden, such as ferns, palms, bamboos and cacti. Usually exotic, they are grown for their strong shape and year-round presence. Gardening with architectural plants is one of the fastest growing areas of horticulture in Britain. The bulk of this guide comprises a comprehensive directory of the most common architectural plants available for growing. Each entry includes: background information on general characteristics, planting and care; a table of plant care with easily accessed advice on soil, site, watering, pruning, general care and pests and diseases; colour-coded icons to indicate hardiness; and expert tip boxes. The book opens with a practical guide to essential gardening techniques, which covers: assessing your plot for soil quality, drainage, sun and shade; where to buy and how to tell if the plant is healthy; advice for planting trees and plants; creative ideas for planting combinations; specialist care for architectural plants throughout the year, including winter protection, brown bitting and pruning; and increasing stock with propagation techniques. The book closes with a section on plant problems, which includes a trouble-shooting chart to identify the problem and a directory of pests and diseases.

Exotic Planting for Adventurous Gardeners

HB Delivery approx 3 days - NEW!
by Christopher Lloyd

This book is all about the most exciting plants grown by Christopher Lloyd in his garden at Great Dixter in East Sussex. The great plantsman tells the story of his Exotic Garden, which has delighted, and sometimes shocked, summer visitors since it replaced the Edwardian rose garden nearly fifteen years ago. The rose garden, designed by Edward Lutyens, had remained unchanged for nearly eighty years. Bold foliage of palms was combined with handsome cut-leaved sumach and arching New Zealand flax; statuesque cannas and bright dahlias, threaded with mauve verbena and infilled with annual climbers, added dazzling colour from June until the first frosts, and the whole feeling created was one of being wrapped in a voluptuous living community. Illustrated with hundreds of photographs by Jonathan Buckley, "Exotic Planting for Adventurous Gardeners" both inspires and instructs. Few gardeners will be able to resist Lloyd's call to 'do something outlandish, to splash out, and be freer than ever'.

Greenhouse Gardening by Anne Swithinbank

HB Delivery approx 3 days

A greenhouse can be a garden's greatest asset: its nucleus and powerhouse. There are many ways of using a greenhouse and a gardener can adopt one or all of them. In spring, you can start all kinds of young plants from seed; raise tender perennials to fill gaps in the garden; give young vegetable plants like beans and sweetcorn a head start; sow early lettuce while the soil is too sticky to work outdoors. During spring and summer, you can raise greenhouse crops like tomatoes, cucumbers, aubergines and chillis. You'll be able to overwinter tender plants such as bananas and cannas. And the greenhouse can be a showcase full of beautiful, unusual and exotic plants. Trained at Kew and for many years Glasshouse Supervisor at the RHS Garden at Wisley, Anne Swithinbank is the expert on greenhouse gardening, and in this book she comprehensively describes the techniques that will allow you to greatly expand the growing capabilities of your garden.
