Information Growing Banana Plants |
The forecast is for a hot summer, which after a few bad summers should be a welcome relief and so far it looks good. We have implemented a number of different trials for summer bedding this year and we will feedback the results later in the season.
We are still busy now getting the last of our plant backlog out before we concentrate on the more unusual tropical display plants for conservatories but we already have some new plants on offer - see more below.
It is not too late to plant some of the more tropical seeds for larger plants this year and especially with the warmer weather many benefit from germination at this time. Don't miss our summer seed sale of 25% of all seeds!

Fruiting Paw Paw Trees for a Heated Greenhouse
or Conservatory We have been quite successful in propagating the Babaco plants this year and have plenty of plants for sale. These are currently being offered on our www.junglegardens.co.uk site at 25% discount. This is a hybrid Paw Paw crossed with a mountain species and quite cool tolerant. It does not grow much above 6ft even after a year and does not need a large pot to cultivate it so really suitable for pot culture. The fruit is produced in the summer and ripens over the winter with quite large 12" fruits on this all female self fertile cross. It has an excellent flavour with a thin skin that does not need to be peeled off and the fruit is seedless. The plants are robust and have few pest problems (Even mealybug does not like it!) Large attractive palm like leaves make it quite an ornamental plant when not in flower or fruit. Best kept to 1 fruiting stem and it can be pruned back after fruiting to encourage new growth from the base for the following years harvest. The picture is one of our plants with ripe fruit late February 2009. |
