Bletilla Hardy Orchid 1 Bulb җ

This beautiful and hardy deciduous orchid has the distinction of being one of the first orchids in cultivation in England dating from around 1794. Each flower shoot can have up to fourteen beautiful rose-mauve flowers with a ruffled lip about 30mm diameter, scentless and looking something like a miniature Cattleya orchid flower. An established clump can have literally dozens of flower spikes flowering in the late Spring and the clumps only increase in beauty with time.

They rarely exceed two feet in height but are only hardy in the mildest areas though without a winter mulch to protect from frosts, a good pot plant for a cold greenhouse with early spring flowers. As long as the bulb does not suffer any frost they can be grown outside in a free draining humus compost that does not dry out. They have a great reputation of being the absolute easiest orchid for a beginner to grow and unlike most tropical epiphytic orchids, this plant comes from somewhat temperate zones and grows in soil rather than on trees.

Pleione Semi Hardy Alpine Orchid 1 Bulb
Pleione are a semi epiphytic orchid that can be grown either in a pot or a shallow pan in a cold frost free greenhouse. The compost mix used should consist of equal parts loam, sphagnum moss and medium grade orchid compost, this will provide good drainage and moisture retentiveness. Pleione ideally should be re potted every year in fresh compost just before flowering in January. During the rest period give plenty of light and air and during the growing period they can be placed outside. I used to grow these lovely orchids quite successfully in a sunny cold greenhouse using an alpine compost mix in clay pots on a gravel bed.
