As part of our aggressive expansion plans we look for exciting new seeds on a regular basis, all of these new items are consolidated each year into our annual catalogue but we like to integrate them into our Web Site as soon as seed stocks become available. Although these new seeds appear within each category to easily identify them the following is a complete list of all items not in our 2008 catalogue.

Purple Joy Weed 10 seeds
Trailing type foliage with deep burgundy stems. Foliage may appear copper, red, purple, or burgundy depending on the soil or season. Vigorous mounding and trailing habit. Excellent contrast foliage for containers or bedding. This plant has been shown in the past on the BBC Gardeners World program where they were taking cuttings from overwintered plants.

Custard Apple (10 seeds Pr Pkt)
A small cool tolerant, deciduous tree to 15ft. Custard apples make excellent container specimens even grown from seed when they can come into fruit bearing age after just 2-3 years. The trees produce a small knobbly fruit with soft, creamy white flesh often having a minty or custardy flavour. Often called the sugar apple it is extremely popular throughout the tropics.

Orach is a bright red leafy annual grown much like spinach. It tolerates moderate frosts so a first april sowing in the UK is possible. Sow every three or four weeks to insure a continuous supply of young, tender leaves, easier to grow than spinach and a great annual for the edible flower bed with 6ft tall deep red to purple foliage.

These plants produce a good yield of large bright golden beetroots. Best when harvested when small, but they will not become fibrous when large. They were a colour breakthrough when Burpee introduced them, excellent for those who want a beetroot with a sweeter, milder flavour, and for others who love the inviting gold colour. Smaller roots to 2" across. The light green leaves can also be steamed or used raw in mixed salads.

Striped Beetroot (Aprx 200 seeds Pr Pkt)

This globed shaped Italian beetroot has dark green leaves and deep red stems. When the beetroot is sliced unusual red and white rings are exposed, adding an attractive element to salads. It has a sweet taste and useful for salads or as a hot vegetable. Jamie Oliver has been seen using these on one of his TV programs.

This Broad Bean is always popular with high yields of large pods containing 5 to 8 green beans. A fairly hardy bean that grows to about 3ft and can be sown from February to March but watch out for severe late winter weather. In cold areas try starting these beans off in pots in a greenhouse for planting out in early April for an earlier crop.

Giant Himalayan Lily (10 seeds Pr Pkt) җ җ җ
Although classed as a lily for many years, this aristocratic woodland plant from the Himalayas is unmistakably different. The bulbs eventually make 8" across, from which a rosette of leaves then appear for 2 to 4 years before an astonishing and stately flower spike erupts, with up to 50, 6" long glistening white very fragrant trumpets. After that the main bulb dies, leaving many smaller ones that take a few years to reach flowering size again. RHS AGM award. Slow from seed but very expensive to purchase bulbs.

Strawberry Spinach (Pr Pkt approx 100 seeds)
A member of the goosefoot family and a native of Europe this plant is known for the red fruits that form at maturity. These are pleasantly sweet, but insipid alongside a real berry. The real crop comes from the spinach-green, triangular, and bite-sized leaves with toothed margins, borne in an open rosette. A warm position, fast growing plant for summer salads and a beautiful curiosity in fruit.

An opportunity to purchase seed of a rare variegated yellow/green leafed hybrid. Excellent house plant with large heads of bright orange red flowers. Easy to raise from seed but it does take a few years to reach flowering size but in the interim the attractive foliage brings its own rewards.

Ivy Gourd or Dondakaya is a widely consumed vegetable in India, rich in beta-carotene, and available in India through out the year, large numbers are now imported daily to the UK.  The small, stubby, green coloured vegetables which grow on aggressive perennial vines are used to prepare delicious stuffed curries, stews, pickles, salads and stir fries. can be harvested at the green unripe stage or when red. The young shoots and leaves can also be eaten as greens and the fruits can be eaten raw. Worth a try as an annual crop in a warm sheltered spot in the UK and our seeds come from a selected Indian cultivar.

A magnificent species, growing to 8m, with a truly exotic bold look, this is slightly more tender than australis and not so often seen in cultivation in the UK, frost tender to -5C. It differs from C. australis by having much broader leaves often with a red central midrib.

We have been growing these bright yellow courgettes for many years, they are prolific croppers and add a real dash of colour to both the vegetable garden and the table. Pick young as courgettes or leave to large marrows, which are excellent for stuffing with a mincemeat filling and baking in the oven. For a continuous crop pick regularly.

A new and exciting dwarf Dahlia 12" to 18" in height with a good colour range of double flowers in white, pink, red, purple, and orange from July to frost. Like Bishops children, what makes this variety special is the dark maroon/green foliage. Excellent for bedding out and if you want a particular selection of colours like all red/scarlet just keep the tubers over winter from the selected colours for next years plants.

Japanese persimmon or Sharon Fruit (10 seeds Pr Pkt)
The most widely cultivated species is Diospyros kaki or Japanese persimmon and cultivars are sold in supermarkets as Sharon fruit. These are sweet, slightly tart fruits with a soft to occasionally fibrous texture. Native to China, it is deciduous, with broad, stiff leaves. Cultivation of the fruit extended first to other parts of east Asia, and was later introduced to southern Europe in the 1800s, and numerous cultivars like 'Hachiya' have been selected. Seed grown plants produce both male and female trees.

Diospyros kaki prefer a good deep loamy soil in sun or light shade disliking very acid or wet and poorly drained conditions. Dormant plants of Diospyros kaki are quite hardy in Britain, tolerating temperatures down to about -14°C but they require warmer summers than are normally experienced in Britain in order to ripen their fruit and wood. The young growth in spring, even on mature plants, is frost-tender and so it is best to grow the plants in a position sheltered from the early morning sun. A warm sunny wall improves the
