All of our New Introductions not listed in our 2008 Catalogue

As part of our aggressive expansion plans we look for exciting new seeds on a regular basis, all of these new items are consolidated each year into our annual catalogue but we like to integrate them into our Web Site as soon as seed stocks become available. Although these new seeds appear within each category to easily identify them the following is a complete list of all items not in our 2008 catalogue.

Firebush (10 seeds Pr Pkt)
Hamelia patens, a fast growing scrambling shrub like plant, flowers late spring to early autumn and the flowers are bright orangish-red borne in clusters. The stems and flower stalks also have a red hue. The Firebush from Mexico is heat and drought tolerant and requires good drainage and a hot sunny position. Very popular with butterfly collectors that love the nectar. (The butterflies not the collectors!)

Hedychium Disney

JS2301
!
Hardy Red Ginger (10 seeds Pr Pkt)  җ җ
This is a form of Hedychium coccineum, apparently it originally came from Disney World many years ago hence the name It has a strong upright habit growing to 4-5 ft tall in warm climates but shorter to 3ft or 4ft in the UK. It starts very early in the season, one of the first to sprout new growth and withstands frosts reasonably well. The early growth encourages earlier flowers like H. coccineum, with larger showy unscented blooms throughout the late summer months and autumn. A bit like a shorter more clumping version of H Tara.

Helianthus Red Shades

!
Moulin Rouge and Velvet Queen hybrids 10 seeds
I have been doing some research to find the best red sunflowers in the world and I have come up with Velvet Queen and Moulin Rouge, both have flowers with a dark chocolate centre and crimson to maroon petals with no brown colour content growing to 4ft tall with 6" wide flowers. Unlike Prado Red the reverse of the petals are not orange brown either but deep red. Until they flower though from our own trials I cannot be certain which one will give the best red colour but you are welcome to carry out trials youselves?

Heliconia collinsiana

Hanging Red Heliconia (10 seeds Pr Pkt)
Heliconia collinsiana is an attractive plant relatively short to about 7 feet, with spectacular solid red bracts that have a frosty wax coating.  The leaf undersides and pseudostems also have a heavy waxy coating. We find it not so hardy as some of the Heliconias that we grow, but well worth the effort both from the attractive foliage and the stunning flowers, given very warm greenhouse conditions.

Ipomoea Mt Fuji

JS2331
!
Stunning Picotee Type Morning Glory (20 seeds Per Pkt)
Our photo does not do justice to these astonishingly vivid and intense coloured hybrids. From midsummer until frosts, Mt. Fuji explodes with iridescence, luminous sky-blue, violet, royal purple, bright pink, and deep crimson flowers! All highlighted by a brilliant white pinwheel and picotee pattern, each large 6-inch bloom stays open longer than many other Ipomoeas and the bright green foliage is generously splashed with white and gray tones, making it equally attractive.

Hardy Sweet Pea Mixed Colours (10 Seeds Pr Pkt) җ җ җ
This is a very much neglected but worthwhile hardy garden perennial climbing plant. They quickly reach a height of 6-8 feet and can be trained over an archway, against trellis, fence or sunny wall. Our seed selection contains flowers in shades of deep rose pink, white and purple rose and are excellent for cutting. Perfume is very light though compared with annual sweet peas. We grow a few of these plants up metal obelisks each year with flowers produced all summer long.

Manilkara zapota

JS2383

Sapodilla (10 seeds Pr Pkt)
The sapodilla is a very common fruit in the tropics, and can be grown easily from seed although the resulting fruit quality is variable. It has glossy green leaves up to 5 in long which have pointed tips, and white flowers which produce 5-8 cm fruits. Cool tolerant to just above frost level it might be worth a try as a pot plant. Fruit is not produced though until about the 5th year. This tree is also famous for initially providing the ingrediants for chewing gum which used the rubber like latex extracted from the tree trunks (chicle)

Passiflora ligularis

Black Spanish Radish (Aprx 100 seeds Pr Pkt) җ

This very unusual heirloom radish traces its history back to  the 16th Century, unlike other varieties, which are typically a shade of red or white, the Black Spanish Round Radish features stunning black roots with a crispy milky white interior. The roots are a globe shaped, reach 3" to 4" across and feature a crispy white flesh with a pungent, peppery taste, that becomes milder when larger. An excellent winter keeper and may be left in the ground and covered with hay or straw mulch for protection from freezing if sown in the autumn. Can also be sown in spring for a summer crop. Another unusual vegetable seen on one of Jamie Olivers cooking programs recently.

Soya Bean Black Jet

JS2307
!
Larger picture
Soybean (30 seeds Pr Pkt)
Cool, short summers don't suit most soya beans - they need heat, water and humidity to do well. But this new, hardier variety 'Black Jet' is one of the best to grow in the UK in a poor summer. The black beans can be eaten raw with drinks and have a deliciously creamy, pistachio-like taste. To cook the beans boil the pods in unsalted or salted water for 10 minutes and then shell the beans inside, simply by squeezing beans out of the pods, for eating. The cooked or uncooked pods can be stored in the freezer for later uses and cooked with meat or mixed with other vegetables for various dishes. Grows to 2ft with white flowers.

Rare Seed not offered in the UK before!

Indonesian Wax Ginger (Qty 10 seeds per Pkt)

Commonly called Indonesian Wax Ginger, Tapeinochilus ananassae is one of the most beautiful and exotic plants on the market today. This is a "must have" plant for any tropical enthusiast! The cone-shaped bract is deep red and has bright yellow flowers. When the bract first emerges, it looks like a little rose but as the bract grows and elongates, it produces a spectacular scarlet inflorescence. Indonesian Wax Ginger can grow to be 8 feet tall but smaller in pots, with 12" dark green soft leaves arranged spirally around bamboo-like stems. The flower stems arise separately from the root stock to 2ft tall like Etlingera. They need a tropical climate or warm greenhouse. Often used in the tropics for cut flower displays.

Verbascum bombyciferum Polar Summer

JS2361
!
Mullein (50 Seeds Pr Pkt) җ җ җ
This is an eye-catching plant with heavily felted, silver-grey rosettes of large leaves that look outstanding in winter. From these, tall, furry, silvery flower-spikes emerge in early summer. These reach their full height by mid-summer and start to produce a succession of wide-open, yellow flowers which continue into late summer. After flowering, the spikes still look attractive for months before starting to die off. Plants self-seed copiously and if possible leave the seedlings where they appear naturally as they are very drought-tolerant and are not fond of being transplanted. Needs a well drained sunny position.

Verbascum hybridum Banana Custard

JS2363
!
Mullein (50 Seeds Pr Pkt) җ җ җ
This wonderful Verbascum hybrid produces huge, two toned flowers from late spring into early summer that look fantastic in any perennial garden. The blooms are a mixture of bright and light yellow, and are somewhat different from the rest. Also known as Mullein, this wonderful plant has light green foliage that will add great contrast to the flower color. The plants grow to a height of two to four feet with a spread of one to two feet. Try Banana Custard in rocky sloped for color, or as a border plant in a cottage garden.

Verbascum hybridum Snow Maiden

JS2362
!
Mullein (50 Seeds Pr Pkt) җ җ җ
The tall, erect spikes of 'Snow Maiden' are packed with small, pure white flowers, which have yellow stamens, and will continue to appear over a long summer. It makes a striking show for the middle to back of a multi-coloured border or white bed, and is easily grown from seed. Free-draining soil is vital, also making it a good contender for Mediterranean-type areas with plenty of sun and light soil.
