You can grow these tropical beans like runner beans starting off in small pots in late April before planting out after last frosts or grow in a greenhouse border. These tropical beans need heat to do well though and a hot sheltered spot or a greenhouse will give you the best results where they are very fast growing.  This variety will produce pods from 15" to 36" long. Regular cropping required and pick the pods young. Please note that the plants do not like acid soil.

I have not grown runner beans for many years as I find the stringless climbing french bean superior in flavour and easier to prepare for cooking or for the freezer. A modern and much improved version of Scarlet Emperor, that produces smooth, narrow, and stringless pods, which typically measure 30cm by 2.5cm. Excellent vigour with a long cropping period. This Broad Bean is always popular with high yields of large pods containing 5 to 8 green beans. A fairly hardy bean that grows to about 3ft and can be sown from February to March but watch out for severe late winter weather. Cool, short summers don't suit most soya beans - they need heat, water and humidity to do well. But this new, hardier variety 'Black Jet' is one of the best to grow in the UK in a poor summer. The black beans can be eaten raw with drinks and have a deliciously creamy, pistachio-like taste. To cook the beans boil the pods in unsalted or salted water for 10 minutes and then shell the beans inside, simply by squeezing beans out of the pods, for eating. The cooked or uncooked pods can be stored in the freezer for later uses and cooked with meat or mixed with other vegetables for various dishes. Grows to 2ft with white flowers.

This edible soybean, called Edamame, is grown mainly to harvest the young green-shelled beans for vegetable uses, but not for the matured soybean crops. Plants grow best in warm climates but poorly in cold conditions so a warm position will be needed. Harvesting is like peas, all at the same time, so a staggered sowing can be an advantage. This is the Japanese way to enjoy Edamame and excellent for snacks and appetizers.
