Bean Asparagus Yard Long

Asparagus Bean  Aprx 50 seeds
You can grow these tropical beans like runner beans starting off in small pots in late April before planting out after last frosts or grow in a greenhouse border. These tropical Asparagus Yard Long Beans need heat to do well though and a hot sheltered spot or a greenhouse will give you the best results where they are very fast growing.  This variety will produce pods from 15" to 36" long. Regular cropping required and pick the pods young. Please note that the plants do not like acid soil.

Bean Barlotto Lingua Di Fuoco 2

Red climbing French Bean  Aprx 75 seeds
I have not grown runner beans for many years as I find the stringless climbing french bean superior in flavour and easier to prepare for cooking or for the freezer. However I know how popular runner beans are so we are offering you some excellent new and old varieties to try. Bean Barlotto Lingua is sometimes called ‘Fire-Tongue’, a mid-early climbing french bean with long, inflated pod containing around 7 cream coloured beans with red ‘splodges’. Sow Apr-mid Jul.

Bean Dried Black Eyed

Black Eyed Bean or Pea.  Aprx 75 Seeds

Dwarf Bean Habit

Black-eyed peas or black-eyed beans (actually a bean not a pea) are a subspecies of the cowpea and were first grown and relished in Asia and Africa but became popular in southern states of the USA. These heat loving plants prefer a well drained sandy loamy soil, and are not tolerant of cold weather so best raised under glass and planted out in Mid june to avoid frosts. A bush plant grown like dwarf french beans and harvested when dried on the plant by the sun perhaps best grown in a polytunnel in the UK.

Bean Dried Black Turtle

Black Turtle Beans.  Aprx 75 Seeds

Dwarf Bean Habit

The black turtle bean is very easy to grow in a well-prepared soil, and they’re a fiber-packed, heart-healthy staple diet in many ethnic dishes. Grow just like dwarf beans although these grow to about 2ft tall and would benefit from some twigs or other supports as in growing peas. Leave in the sun to fully dry and only harvest once the beans turn black. Black beans are so versatile, you can enjoy them in many recipes in place of red or pinto beans. They’re great in chilis or stews, and are delicious in rice and bean recipes, as well as burritos and enchiladas. The Black Bean has lovely purple flowers.

Bean Dried Cannellini

Cannellini Dried Beans.  Aprx 75 Seeds

Dwarf Bean Habit

Commercially produced as a dried bean the plants themselves are easy to grow and can produce a large number of beans per bush. They are of a bush type needing a long growing season and grown like dwarf french beans with a little support using twigs etc. Leave the bean pods on the plants until dry before harvesting, best grown in a hot sunny location.

Bean Dried Dalmatin

Calypso Bean, Orca Bean or Yin Yang Bean.  Aprx 50 Seeds

Dwarf Bean Habit

Bean Dried Dalmatin is an heirloom Bean with a remarkable black and white colour pattern which gives them the appearance of the Yin Yang symbol of Chinese astrology; other people see it looking like the Orca Whale. They are smoothly textured with a good mild flavour and are great for baked dishes and stews and can add visual appeal to almost any recipe or salad. It is a dwarf Bush Bean to 15" high, producing compact and high yielding plants, the beans can be harvested as green beans when very young and tender like French beans, or they can be left on the plant until the pods are dry. These can then be shelled to reveal the quite fascinating beans that can be dried.

Bean Dried Pinto

Pinto Beans.  Aprx 75 Seeds

Dwarf Bean Habit

Pinto beans are the most commonly used beans in Mexican food and belong to the family Phaseolus vulgaris just like all other beans and easy to grow. They are a pinkish tan colour and spotted when dried. They are originally from Central and South America though they are even found growing towards Mexico and continental U.S. Grow like other dwarf Beans but start off under glass early in pots before planting out in warm conditions in June.

Pea Bean Dried

Heritage Climbing French Bean.  Aprx 50 Seeds

Climbing Bean Habit

Another heirloom Bean, the Pea Bean has a striking brown and white colour pattern like the Orca Bean. This is a bean that has a long 400 year history in the UK, and although it was almost lost to cultivation for a long period, surviving only in out of the way places and gardens it is now becoming available again. It is a climbing French Bean that can be harvested as green beans when very young and tender like French beans, or they can be left on the plant until the pods and beans are dry. These can then be shelled to reveal the quite fascinating beans that can be kept dried.

Dried Beans are high in soluble fiber that helps reduce cholesterol, high in potassium and contain good quantities of magnesium along with other vital nutrients which help regulate blood pressure. Dried Beans are high in protein and carbohydrates, low in fats and calories. This combination with the soluble fiber make beans a great diet food and helps to reduce hunger.

Soya Bean Black Jet

Soybean  Aprx 30 seeds
Cool, short summers don't suit most soya beans - they need heat, water and humidity to do well. But this new, hardier variety Soya Bean Black Jet is one of the best to grow in the UK in a poor summer. The black beans can be eaten raw with drinks and have a deliciously creamy, pistachio-like taste. To cook the beans boil the pods in unsalted or salted water for 10 minutes and then shell the beans inside, simply by squeezing beans out of the pods, for eating. The cooked or uncooked pods can be stored in the freezer for later uses and cooked with meat or mixed with other vegetables for various dishes. Grows to 2ft with white flowers.

JS2307

Soya Bean Edamame

Soybean  Aprx 30 seeds
This edible soybean, called Edamame, is grown mainly to harvest the young green-shelled beans for vegetable uses, but not for the matured soybean crops. Plants grow best in warm climates but poorly in cold conditions so a warm position will be needed. Harvesting is like peas, all at the same time, so a staggered sowing can be an advantage. Expect only 2 to 3 beans per pod. To cook Edamame, boil the pods in unsalted or salted water for 10 minutes and then shell the beans inside, simply by squeezing beans out of the pods, for eating. This is the Japanese way to enjoy Edamame and excellent for snacks and appetizers. The cooked or uncooked pods can be stored in the freezer for later uses and cooked with meat or mixed with other vegetables for various dishes.
